People Power Party Protests 'Censorship' Ahead of IT Network Law Enforcement
Amidst protests and concerns of "prior censorship" ahead of the enforcement of the amended Information and Communications Network Act, driven by the Democratic Party of Korea, the People Power Party (PPP) has decided to take action to protect citizens' basic rights through constitutional appeals and revisions of problematic clauses.
Rep. Joo Jin-woo previously criticized the amended Information and Communications Network Act as the "Citizen Gagging Act" and announced his intention to file a constitutional appeal challenging the unconstitutionality of social media censorship. The rationale is that acts by the state and platform operators to control individual intentions beforehand are contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.
The PPP plans to examine cases of freedom of expression infringement after the law takes effect and protect citizens' basic rights by correcting problematic clauses such as vague regulations on fake information and platform liability.
