People Power Party Holds General Meeting, Expresses Concern Over Expanding Police Authority…Strengthens Legislation on Prosecutorial Supplementary Investigation Rights
The People Power Party discussed urgent issues, including the Democratic Party's push to revise the Criminal Procedure Act and negotiations for the composition of parliamentary committees, during a Supreme Council meeting and a general meeting of lawmakers held at the National Assembly on the 13th. The party strongly opposed the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act, which would grant all investigative powers to the police, arguing it could "create an unrestrained 'police monster,'" and urged the processing of bills to balance investigative powers.
Floor Leader Jeong Cheong-seung stated his opposition to abolishing the supplementary investigation authority, describing it as a minimal safety device for victims and a check against the police. Floor Leader Jeong proposed to the government and the ruling party to redesign the criminal investigation system from scratch, standing on the side of the victims.
Prior to the general meeting, Floor Leader Jeong Cheong-seung met with senior party members to hear their opinions on urgent issues, including responses to the supplementary investigation authority and negotiations for the composition of parliamentary committees.
