Apple AirDrop, Android Quick Share Flaws Pose Hacking Risk
Smartphone file-sharing features are exposed to hacking risks. Researchers at Germany's CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security discovered a total of six vulnerabilities while investigating Apple's AirDrop and Android's Quick Share functions. These flaws were confirmed to be common across software implementations from Apple, Samsung, and Google.
The discovered vulnerabilities include a crash bug that disables AirDrop and protocol issues in Samsung Quick Share. Notably, a bug found in Google Quick Share for Windows could lead to remote code execution, potentially allowing attackers to take control of a device remotely.
These vulnerabilities raise the possibility that nearby attackers in public places like airports, coffee shops, and conference rooms could exploit smartphone file-sharing features. Users are advised to exercise caution.
