Heatwave Alert Nationwide Surge in Vacationers Calls for Caution Regarding Water Safety

As the heatwave intensifies nationwide and the number of people heading out for vacations increases, special caution is advised against swimming accidents. At Boryeong Daecheon Beach in South Chungcheong Province, as well as at beaches and valleys across the country, vacationers are continuing to arrive in droves to cool off.

Daily high temperatures in Daejeon and Sejong are expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius, while temperatures in South Chungcheong Province will rise to between 32 and 35 degrees. With no clear prospect of rain for the time being, the sweltering heat is expected to persist. A heatwave warning is currently in effect for Boryeong, and tropical nights—where nighttime temperatures do not fall below 25 degrees—are continuing.

Over the past five years, the number of fatalities due to swimming accidents has exceeded 100, with more than half occurring between late July and early August when summer vacation and school holidays are in full swing. Lack of swimming ability and safety negligence are cited as the primary causes.

Swimmers are urged to wear life jackets and use designated safety zones when entering the water. Entering the water after drinking should be avoided, and caregivers must keep their eyes on children at all times.
