Life Without Appliances, Britain's Shadow of Poverty

A survey has revealed that two million households, approximately 4.8 million people in Britain, are living without essential appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. As the economy tightens, it has become increasingly difficult for families to repair or replace broken appliances, leading to a rise in these situations. This is not an isolated problem affecting only a few homes but is evident across British society, with low-income households experiencing significant hardship.

Households without essential appliances face constraints in their daily lives, such as having to hand-wash clothes or being unable to prepare proper meals. Jenny Herrera, director of the charity Acts 435, emphasized that appliances are fundamental to daily life and that living without them exacerbates the struggles of those already in difficult circumstances.

Acts 435 provides assistance with purchasing and repairing appliances, offering support to those facing financial difficulties. In 2025, the organization supported approximately 2,000 individuals and families with cooking appliances, washing machines, refrigerators, and freezers. One-third of those who received support from the charity had requested help due to a need for essential appliances.

Local churches and private charities are conducting support activities to bridge the gap created by limitations in income and welfare benefits. Households in poverty who cannot access support systems rely on family or acquaintances to continue their lives. The organization explained that appliance support plays a role in restoring individuals' self-esteem and normalizing household functions.
