Homeplus Gangneung Store Closure Sparks Fears of Local Business Decline
The prolonged closure of Homeplus Gangneung, located in Okcheon-dong, Gangneung, Gangwon Province, for over 20 days is impacting the local business landscape. Homeplus cited depleted operating funds as the reason for the temporary suspension of its hypermarket operations starting last month on the 13th. The extended shutdown has created a tangible void in the local economy, where the large retail facility played a significant role.
With the hypermarket's operations halted, foot traffic and visitor numbers in the old downtown areas of Okcheon-dong and Jungang-dong have drastically decreased, even during the summer vacation season, leading to a contraction of the local commercial district. Store owners operating within the Homeplus building reported receiving no prior notice regarding the closure, and the building is showing signs of vacancy, with 'For Lease' signs appearing in various spots.
Approximately 100 employees have resigned due to this situation, seeking employment in other cities and counties such as Donghae and Yangyang. As the impact widens, the Gangneung city government has begun to implement measures, including providing job-seeking support through its employment center.
