Nvidia Tests Next-Gen 'Rubin Ultra' AI Chip with HBM4

Nvidia has begun performance testing of its next-generation AI chip, 'Rubin Ultra,' by equipping prototype units with 192GB to 256GB of memory. The company is testing some prototypes with HBM4—a tier below the originally planned HBM4E memory—in a bid to adjust its design to prepare for potential memory supply shortages.

Nvidia had previously announced plans to equip each GPU with approximately 256GB of HBM4E when it unveiled the Rubin Ultra roadmap last year. The currently produced 'Vera Rubin' is equipped with up to 288GB of HBM4 per GPU.

Nvidia plans to finalize the specifications for the 'Rubin Ultra' ahead of its launch in the second half of next year, after comprehensively considering factors such as HBM4E supply conditions, costs, and customer demand.
