Hong Ji-sun's Confirmation Report Adopted Through Bipartisan Agreement

The National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee on Monday adopted the personnel hearing progress report on Land Minister nominee Hong Ji-sun, which summarizes the findings on the nominee's qualifications and issues raised during the hearing, through a bipartisan agreement at its plenary session. The report includes both the Democratic Party's opinion that the nominee is fit for the post and the People Power Party's opinion that she is unfit, presented side by side.

The Democratic Party took the view that Hong has the capacity to serve as minister, citing her experience in key positions within Gyeonggi Province and as vice minister of land, infrastructure and transport. The People Power Party's unfit opinion cited poor document submissions for the hearing and examples of policy failures. It also argued that Hong's rapid promotion through her ties with Gyeonggi Province during President Lee Jae-myung's tenure as governor made it unlikely she would pursue policies according to principle and conviction.

Hong previously served as head of Gyeonggi Province's urban and housing bureau and as vice minister of land, infrastructure and transport, and was nominated as minister roughly eight months after her appointment as vice minister. During the hearing held on the 16th, the ruling and opposition parties clashed over controversy surrounding Hong's highly leveraged purchase of an apartment in Seoul's Guro District and their assessments of the Lee Jae-myung administration's real estate policies.
