AMD CEO Lisa Su Plans Return to Korea After 7 Months

AMD Chair Lisa Su is coming back to Korea. She is pushing for a visit next month, about seven months after her trip in March. According to the semiconductor and IT industries on the 30th, plans are being actively considered to hold an AI chip roundtable attended by Su in Seoul on the 8th of next month.

The key agenda item for the meeting is follow-up measures to the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on AI chip ecosystem cooperation that the Ministry of Science and ICT and AMD signed in July. Under the MOU, the two sides agreed to build a heterogeneous AI infrastructure that links AMD's CPUs and GPUs with domestically produced NPUs in a single computing environment to demonstrate performance and compatibility. The idea is to efficiently allocate different chips according to the characteristics of each task, reducing the cost and power consumption of AI services.

The scope of cooperation will extend to building an open ecosystem involving memory, data processing units (DPUs), Compute Express Link (CXL), networks, servers, and software companies. AMD has also agreed to establish a center of excellence for AI research in Korea and pursue joint research in talent development, AI for scientific research, and physical AI. The roundtable is expected to cover a proof-of-concept project applying Korean NPUs and AMD products in a real data center environment, as well as joint research, software support, and ways for Korean companies to enter the global supply chain.

During her visit to Korea in March, Su signed an MOU on AI chip and memory cooperation with Jun Young-hyun, CEO and head of Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions Division, at the company's Pyeongtaek campus, and later joined Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong for dinner at Seungjiwon in Hannam-dong, Seoul. Samsung Electronics was subsequently selected as the preferred supplier of HBM4 memory for AMD's next-generation AI accelerator, the Instinct MI455X.

Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and LG Electronics said regarding their meeting schedules with Su, "No specific schedule has been confirmed at this time."
