On the 17th, during National Assembly committee meetings for Foreign Affairs and Unification and National Defense, lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties urged a cautious response to reports of a U.S. request for warship deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, citing constitutional concerns and insufficient military readiness. The government maintained that no official request had been received.

During the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee's plenary session, lawmakers from the Democratic Party questioned Foreign Minister Cho Hyun regarding the constitutionality of deploying troops. They argued that such a deployment could violate the constitutional prohibition against aggressive warfare and, if a warship were attacked, could lead to de facto participation in war, necessitating parliamentary ratification procedures.

At the National Defense Committee, the Democratic Party also warned of the risks of attack due to the Strait of Hormuz's narrow waterway, which is only 5 kilometers wide. Citing foreign media reports, some lawmakers questioned the necessity of troop deployment itself, expressing reservations about military intervention.

Lawmakers from the People Power Party, while prioritizing the safety of Korean vessels and sailors, reviewed the capabilities of the Cheonghae Unit, which has been mentioned in discussions about potential deployment. They emphasized the need to bolster military readiness, including ammunition and weapon systems, stating that its current light armament focused on anti-piracy operations would be insufficient for actual combat.

The government reiterated its stance that it has not received any official request from the United States for warship deployment. The Ministry of National Defense also stated it is monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East and responding accordingly. Minister Cho Hyun addressed queries regarding the possibility of a U.S. request during the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee session, and the government is reportedly considering various countermeasures based on the regional dynamics.
