Gas Price Cuts at Pumps Barely Felt; Government to Step Up Nationwide Monitoring

Even as oil refiners lower prices, these reductions are being slowly reflected in actual pump prices. To protect consumer benefits, the government is intensifying price monitoring across all gas stations nationwide. Compared to the period just before the implementation of the oil price cap system on March 13, 2026, refiner supply prices have dropped by over 100 won per liter. However, since the system took effect, retail prices at gas stations have only decreased by 66 won per liter for gasoline and 87 won per liter for diesel. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced that the pace at which consumer prices are being reflected at the distribution level since the price cap system's implementation has fallen short of expectations.

The government will conduct comprehensive monitoring of approximately 10,000 gas stations nationwide, using Oilnet data as its basis. The Energy & Petroleum Market Surveillance Team will inspect gas station selling prices on a daily basis and identify and publicize gas stations acting contrary to price reductions.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan met with the Energy & Petroleum Market Surveillance Team on March 17, 2026, to discuss measures for monitoring gas station prices. Gas stations that cooperate with price stabilization efforts will be designated as 'Good Gas Stations' and receive incentives such as certification stickers and government commendations. On March 16, 2026, Minister Kim visited Changhyun Gas Station, a discount station in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, to check price trends and observe the fuel truck delivery process.
