China Leverages Funds, Troops to Expand Influence Within UN
The US House Select Committee has released a report detailing how China is mobilizing substantial funds and personnel to expand its influence within the United Nations. According to the report, China's contribution to the UN budget has surged from approximately 2% to over 20% in the past two decades. The committee has pointed out that China is engaged in systematic activities aimed at pursuing its strategic interests within the UN. China employs a strategy of concentrating UN peacekeeping force deployments in regions where its economic and strategic priorities are at stake.
The report analyzes that China specifically seeks to convert its influence into tangible power by deploying its citizens, particularly in regions such as Africa. It describes China as leveraging the UN system to steer decision-making in its favor, rather than directly violating UN regulations. The report also includes instances where China's delayed budget contributions have hampered the UN's human rights investigation work.
