Avian Flu Outbreak Leads to 10 Million Bird Cull; Egg Prices Nearing 8,000 Won
As the deadly Avian Influenza (AI) spreads, 10 million poultry birds, including chickens and ducks, have been culled. The impact of AI outbreaks this winter has resulted in the culling of nearly 10 million laying hens, leading to a decrease in egg supply.
With bird flu directly impacting consumer prices, the cost of an egg carton is approaching 8,000 won. Recently, the retail price of an egg carton in the Jeju region reached 7,600 won, a 12.5% increase compared to average years and a 7.3% rise from last year. Egg carton prices sold in Jeju city supermarkets are in the mid-7,000 won range, with more expensive varieties exceeding 8,000 won.
The surge in prices for essential food items like eggs and chicken has increased the burden on household grocery budgets and continues to create difficulties for small business owners. Due to disruptions in broiler chicken supply, the retail price of chicken has risen to 6,700 won, a 16% jump compared to both average and previous years.
