DP Jeju Governor Race: Wi Seong-gon, Moon Dae-rim Clash in Runoff Amid Criticism Over 'Missing Policies'

Wi Seong-gon and Moon Dae-rim, the two candidates who advanced to the final runoff for the Democratic Party's Jeju gubernatorial nomination, have kicked off their all-out campaign efforts this weekend.

Criticism has emerged from other parties (opposition camps) that policy discussions were insufficient in the primary race between the two candidates. Jinbo Party candidate Kim Myung-ho also described the Democratic Party primary as a 'policy-less contest,' pointing out the ruling party's responsibility and failure to finalize its party stance regarding the promise of the second airport. People Power Party candidate Moon Sung-yu cited controversies over 'text message sending' and 'vote-rigging,' asserting that public welfare was neglected.

Candidate Wi Seong-gon expressed gratitude for passing the first hurdle of the Democratic Party's gubernatorial primary election. He appealed for support in the runoff by emphasizing his three main pledges: AX transformation including the establishment of a science and technology institute, the return of offshore wind power profits, and the Jeju-style Public Welfare 119 system. Wi also mentioned the possibility of a partnership with Governor Oh Young-hoon, stating his intention to listen to and discuss with the governor about the future challenges he is contemplating.

Candidate Moon Dae-rim conveyed his thanks to the residents and party members. He announced a '100-Day Urgent Recovery Plan for Public Welfare' where the governor would directly chair the price control committee. Moon urged the current provincial government to expedite budget execution.

Governor Oh Young-hoon, who was eliminated from the primary, is scheduled to return to his gubernatorial duties after stepping down as a preliminary candidate on the 13th, and will continue to perform his duties for the remainder of his term, including checking measures against high oil prices.
