Daimler Truck, Toyota Partner on Hydrogen Truck Technology Development
Global automotive giants Daimler Truck, Toyota, and Volvo Group have joined forces to develop hydrogen fuel cell truck technology for medium- and long-haul transport. This collaboration sheds new light on the potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology amidst the dominance of electric battery systems in the eco-friendly transport market. The three companies become equal partners in Cellcentric, a company specializing in the development of fuel cell systems for heavy-duty trucks and industrial vehicles.
This partnership aims to overcome the limitations faced by battery technology in medium- and long-haul freight transport, such as increased weight, long charging times, and reduced payload capacity. The goal is to expand the hydrogen system infrastructure and realize zero-emission truck transport.
Toyota has been investing in hydrogen technology development since the early 1990s, and these efforts are being validated through actual hydrogen truck operations. Hydrogen fuel cell trucks complement battery-electric systems, enabling faster refueling and long-distance travel without the need for large batteries.
