Netherlands First in Europe to Approve Tesla FSD
The Netherlands has approved Tesla's supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, marking a first for Europe. This development is noteworthy as it paves the way for the full introduction of autonomous driving technology, which still requires driver attention, into the European market.
After approximately 18 months of review, the Dutch automotive regulatory authority, RDW, approved the use of Tesla's supervised FSD on highways and city roads on November 11 (local time). Supervised FSD is a driver assistance system where artificial intelligence (AI) performs braking, acceleration, and steering under the driver's supervision. The RDW stated in a release that the appropriate use of this driver assistance system can contribute positively to road safety.
Tesla's FSD feature is currently in use in the United States, Canada, China, Mexico, Australia, and South Korea. The RDW plans to submit an application to the European Commission (EC) for EU-wide approval. If a majority within the commission votes in favor, FSD systems will become available across all EU member states. Tesla announced via social media platform X that it will introduce supervised FSD to more European countries.
