Gas Prices Up $1, War Costs Estimated at $54 Billion
Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey has demanded the processing of a War Powers Resolution to strengthen congressional control over the Donald Trump administration's military actions related to Iran, citing rising gas prices and increased war costs. Ivey stated on the 14th (local time) that gas prices have risen by more than $1 per gallon and that approximately $54 billion has been spent on the war so far with no end in sight, explaining the background for his demand.
The resolution aims to prevent the president from engaging in further military action beyond defensive purposes and requires a declaration of war by Congress for new operations.
Ivey argued that Republicans should allow the matter to be brought to the floor of the House for a vote and expressed his intention to push for swift action. This marks the second attempt following the defeat of a similar Iran War Powers Resolution proposed by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie in the House in March, which failed by a vote of 212 to 2019. House Speaker Mike Johnson has previously expressed a critical stance on such moves.
The United States initiated hostilities against Iran on February 28th, a move that has been pointed out as a violation of the 1973 War Powers Act. The law stipulates that congressional approval is required for military intervention lasting more than 60 days.
