President Lee Jae-myung Orders Full Support for Yeosu World Island Expo
President Lee Jae-myung has expressed concern over the preparation status for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and ordered comprehensive support from the central government. As concerns about preparations emerged with the event just about four months away, the President emphasized the need for support amidst worries of administrative gaps, vowing to alleviate the burden on local governments. At a Cabinet meeting, President Lee Jae-myung pointed out, "This is a critical time to accelerate infrastructure development and promotion, yet voices of concern are being heard from the field." He referenced the potential for administrative vacancies due to the June local elections and stated, "It is not easy to leave the preparations for the event solely to local governments," ordering an inspection of the progress and directing intervention for support as needed.
Currently, the construction progress for the expo's core infrastructure stands at 78%. The construction of 'Theme Island,' the main venue's landmark, is slated for completion in July, with the remaining eight exhibition halls expected to be finished by August, utilizing reinforced tents and similar structures.
Kim Jong-gi, Secretary-General of the Yeosu World Island Expo Organizing Committee, stated that they would do their utmost to ensure a successful expo in September by meticulously overseeing visitor-welcoming measures, including venue development, transportation, accommodation, food, and environmental aspects, during the remaining period.
