Iran Threatens Red Sea Passage Blockade

A threat has emerged that ship operations in the Red Sea, a major route for global maritime logistics, could be suspended. Iran has mentioned the possibility of blocking Red Sea navigation in response to the US blockade of ports. Iran's Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi warned that if the US continues the blockade of Iranian ports, it would block maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman, and Red Sea. He stated this could create uncertainty for Iranian merchant and oil tankers, leading to violations of existing truce agreements, and added that the Iranian military would not tolerate any import or export activities in those waters.

The US Central Command stated that it had intercepted nine vessels attempting to blockade Iranian ports, all of which were identified as oil tankers. The US Navy destroyer seized two oil tankers attempting to depart Iran the previous day. No vessels passed through US forces during the initial 48 hours of the blockade; the nine intercepted vessels reportedly returned to Iranian ports or coastal areas following orders to turn back. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre commented that the US blockade measures would make Iran's attempts to secure deals even more desperate.

This escalation in geopolitical tension has heightened concerns over the stability of global oil transport routes. The Red Sea is connected to the Suez Canal, forming a critical maritime route between Europe and Asia. Disruptions here could lead to a reduction in international trade volume and supply chain instability.
