US Convenes Top-Level Meeting on Strait of Hormuz Crisis
The United States has convened a top-level security meeting in response to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and ship attacks. U.S. President Donald Trump presided over a meeting in the White House Situation Room on the 18th (local time) to assess the Strait of Hormuz crisis and discuss ongoing negotiations with Iran. The meeting was attended by key foreign and security officials including the Vice President, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense, along with the CIA Director and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to review a strategy of parallel military response and diplomatic solutions.
The previous day, Iran reversed its announcement to conditionally resume passage through the strait, re-declaring a blockade and tightening maritime control. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps designated the U.S. maritime blockade as a 'ceasefire violation' and warned of restrictions on ship movements in the Persian Gulf region.
President Trump stated that Iran's actions were "not working as intimidation," while also asserting that negotiations are "still proceeding smoothly."
The Pakistani military leadership has delivered a new U.S. proposal to Iran's Supreme National Security Council, which Iran has stated it is reviewing. With the mutually agreed two-week conditional ceasefire deadline fast approaching, there is a possibility of military conflict resuming should negotiations collapse.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital corridor for global oil transport, and heightened tensions in the region directly impact global supply chains and energy prices.
