Ex-Prosecutor General Criticizes Special Committee's Probe as 'Unconstitutional'

Former Seoul Central District Prosecutor General Song Kyung-ho on the 19th criticized the National Assembly's Special Committee for Investigation (SCI) as violating the constitution and laws, fundamentally shaking the judicial system and acting against the constitution.

Song argued that the SCI's activities, under the guise of clarifying investigative processes, were merely a pretext to disregard court judgments. He pointed out that the committee had lost impartiality as many of its members included defense attorneys for defendants in the case or lawmakers who spearheaded the complaint. He emphasized that disputing trial outcomes in court is the principle of the rule of law.

He stated that objective evidence, including suspicions surrounding former Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-myung, Jung Young-hak's recorded testimony, and approval documents, was clearly outlined in an internal investigative report from May 2022. He countered that dismissing normal investigative procedures as targeted prosecution was a distortion of the facts.

Furthermore, he refuted claims of attempts to coerce testimony from businessman Nam Wook, explaining that the emphasis during the investigation at the time was that 'accurate diagnosis is only possible when the patient accurately describes their symptoms.'
