Stefanik Clashes With CNN Anchor Over Trump's Iran Remarks Amid Controversy
U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik engaged in a verbal sparring match with a CNN anchor over former President Donald Trump's remarks concerning Iran.
During an interview with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, Stefanik countered Tapper's assertion that Trump had called for genocide, stating, "Former President Trump did not call for genocide. You are putting those words in his mouth." The exchange occurred amidst conflicting criticisms and explanations surrounding Trump's recent statements about Iran.
Critics argued that Trump's language, aimed at eliminating threats, could be interpreted as targeting civilians. Stefanik emphasized that Trump was targeting Iran's "terrorist regime" and took issue with media interpretations equating this to a call for genocide.
Stefanik added that Trump's reference to the Iranian regime's history of killing tens of thousands of its own citizens led Iran to the negotiating table and achieved a ceasefire. She criticized those expressing concern over Trump's rhetoric, saying, "If you want to defend the Iranian terrorist regime, that is your responsibility."
Administration officials have stressed that U.S. actions are directed at the regime, not the Iranian people, and are applying pressure to compel negotiations.
