LAUSD Passes Resolution to Limit Student Screen Time
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has passed a resolution to limit students' screen time. The resolution, from LAUSD, the second-largest school district in the United States, was approved 6-0.
The resolution prohibits device use for students in kindergarten and below, and mandates the development of screen time policies for all grades and subjects. It also calls for evaluating educational technology contracts and clarifying procedures for parents to opt their children out of technology use. The resolution also requires a review of all ongoing classroom technology contracts and the submission of a public report.
Board members Carla Guerrero, Tanya Ortiz Franklin, Kelly Gonez, Vice President Rocío Rivas, and Student Board Member Jerry Yang co-sponsored the resolution. Ortiz Franklin stated that when students approach technology use thoughtfully, they are investing in their focus, health, and futures. She added that these guidelines offer younger learners human interaction and playtime, while older learners gain meaningful connections and collaborative opportunities within their community.
Guerrero said the measure was long overdue, expressing pride in co-sponsoring the resolution to establish clear, developmentally appropriate guidelines for screen time and single-purpose device usage within schools to ensure a balanced approach that supports learning, growth, and prosperity with technology.
