Na Kyung-won Criticizes Limits on Capital Gains Tax Deduction for Single-Home Owners
Na Kyung-won, a lawmaker with the People Power Party, strongly protested on the 26th the proposed restriction of the long-term holding special deduction for capital gains tax on non-resident single-home owners, stating, "Is it a sin to live in a rented house while owning my own home?" Through her Facebook account, Na pointed out that single-home owners forced to relocate due to unavoidable circumstances such as job transfers, children's school districts, or caring for parents are being labeled as potential speculators.
She described the current reality, where alleged real estate malpractices by figures from the Democratic Party are dismissed as 'unavoidable asset management' while the homes of ordinary citizens are written off as 'unearned income,' as 'blatant hypocrisy.'
Na criticized that imposing capital gains taxes worth hundreds of millions of won simply for not residing in the property would ultimately force homeowners to seek their own residences, thereby displacing tenants. She further argued that the policy amounts to a 'nationwide moving ban law' and a 'residential confinement' that infringes upon the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of movement, asserting that a 'single word from the President' could trigger a chain reaction of tenant evictions.
