The 'hikikomori' (social recluse) phenomenon in Japan is spreading beyond young adults to middle-aged and elderly individuals, causing the average age of those affected to steadily rise. This has led to situations where elderly parents are financially dependent on their children, emerging as a significant social issue.

Survey results show the average age of hikikomori in Japan is 36.9 years, an increase of 3.8 years from the average of 33.1 years recorded in a 2014 survey. Among the respondents, 43.1% were aged 40 or older, with 12.7% being 50 or older. The organization analyzing the data concluded that the hikikomori issue is no longer confined to young people but is increasingly affecting older age groups.

The average age of the families surveyed was 66.9 years, a slight increase from 66.3 years in 2014. Some cases were identified where parents in their 90s were supporting their hikikomori children in their 60s.
