South Busan Nominations Under Review, Becoming Key Election Factor
Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the ruling People Power Party's (PPP) South Busan belt is facing multiple challenges, including nomination nullification, judicial intervention, and independent candidacies. In Buk District, the nomination for Oh Tae-won, who had been the sole candidate recommended for district mayor, has been suspended by court order, making a re-selection of candidates inevitable. This development has become a significant variable in the local electoral landscape. In Saha District, Kim Cheok-su, a candidate for district mayor, is facing a police reinvestigation over allegations of providing souvenirs to residents. In Sasang District, Cho Byung-gil's decision to run as an independent after being expelled from the PPP has created a three-way race against The Minjoo Party's Seo Tae-kyung and the PPP's Lee Dae-hoon. The Gangseo District Mayor race has seen an election law violation complaint filed against a district official accused of distributing press releases promoting the incumbent mayor's achievements.
Busan Mayor candidate Park Hyung-joon has been intensifying his field operations in the Nakdong River belt area, signaling his resolve to 'defend the front lines.' His first itinerary after registering as a preliminary candidate also began in the Gangseo region. Former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon visited Gupo Market in Buk District on the 29th, a move seen as a factor in encouraging voter turnout among conservative supporters.
The direction of the Busan elections was highly likely to be determined in the South Busan belt. The key question was whether organizational strength and unity could offset the accumulated disadvantages of nomination disputes, legal risks, and conservative factional divisions.
