Jeju Gubernatorial Candidate Selection: 'One Person, Two Votes' Allegations Lead to Criminal Complaint
The campaign of a People Power Party candidate for Jeju governor filed a criminal complaint against Democratic Party candidate Wi Seong-gon with the Jeju Provincial Police Agency on the afternoon of the 4th, alleging violations of the Public Official Election Act. This complaint is related to the 'encouragement of casting one person, two votes' allegations that emerged during the Democratic Party's primary race for Jeju governor.
Mun's campaign included in the complaint allegations that an aide to Wi Seong-gon posted on social media in early last month stating, 'You can vote if you say you are not a dues-paying member,' thereby allegedly inducing dues-paying members to conceal their identity and vote multiple times when responding to phone surveys for general residents. Mun's side characterized this as an act that undermines fair elections.
Mun's campaign also announced plans for further complaints regarding Wi Seong-gon, viewing issues such as potential exaggeration of qualifications in promoting himself as 'architect of the Lee Jae-myung government's state affairs' and inconsistency in his pledge to attract a pharmacy school to Seogwipo as matters that could hinder voters' rational judgment.
Previously, the Jeju Provincial Election Commission, considering the seriousness of the matter, had already reported the individuals involved to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency for alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act. The current complaint filed by Mun's campaign is a separate legal action.
