Beware QR Code Smishing Scams Targeting Traffic Fines

Drivers are warned about a widespread 'smishing' (SMS phishing) scam that demands payment for traffic violation fines using QR codes.

This smishing campaign tricks recipients into paying a $6.99 (approximately 9,000 won) immediate penalty by falsely claiming a violation, a new tactic distinct from similar scams last year that impersonated billing agencies. The scam has been reported in multiple states, including New York, California, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, Texas, Connecticut, and New Jersey. The fraudulent texts are designed to look official and emphasize urgency to disorient recipients.

Notably, this scam embeds QR codes within what appears to be an official court notice, rather than providing a simple link. Scanning the QR code directs users to an intermediate page featuring a CAPTCHA. Proceeding with the payment process reveals fields for sensitive personal information, including name, address, phone number, email, and credit card details. This entered information is then sent to the scammers, who can exploit it for further phishing attempts, identity theft, financial fraud, or sell it to other criminals.

Official court notifications are typically sent via postal mail, not text messages. It is crucial to be wary of scanning QR codes embedded in suspicious text messages. For any message requesting financial or personal information, always verify its authenticity by contacting the relevant institution directly.
