Massie Raises $1M Targeting Trump Ahead of Fierce Primary
Rep. Thomas Massie is focusing on a primary challenge to defend his political standing after criticizing former President Donald Trump, raising more than $1 million this week. Massie, a four-term Republican congressman representing Kentucky's 4th congressional district, is in a heated race against Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL endorsed by Trump. Massie's campaign announced it had raised over $1 million since launching a fundraising initiative dubbed the "Money Bomb" on Monday morning.
Massie has framed the election as a referendum on whether a congressman who keeps his promises is more beneficial to the country than a candidate like Gallrein, who he described as another "warm body from central casting" vowing to be a rubber stamp for the party in power. "This election has become a national referendum on whether we need a congressman who keeps his promises, like myself, or another 'warm body from central casting' like Gallrein, who pledges to be a rubber stamp for the 'uniparty'," Massie stated, characterizing Gallrein as someone seemingly manufactured.
Trump, at a rally in Kentucky in March, referred to Gallrein, saying, "He looks like central casting." He then added, "Give me a warm body who can win, I got a warm body, but he's a great brain and a great patriot. He's amazing," extolling Gallrein. During the speech, Trump also called Massie a "moron."
Massie pointed to the presence of some outside kingmakers supporting Gallrein, emphasizing, "We are leading in the polls, we are leading in local Kentucky fundraising, and we are far ahead in national support, as evidenced by the million-dollar Money Bomb." He added, "That is, if you don't count three progressive billionaires from outside the state supporting my opponent."
In response, Gallrein's campaign fired back. They criticized Massie for seeking an eighth term despite having pledged to serve only three, accusing him of turning his back on Kentuckians and unnecessarily provoking Trump, thereby hindering the entire "America First" agenda. Gallrein's campaign stated, "Thomas Massie serves only one person: Thomas Massie, and the voters of Kentucky's 4th District are about to close the door on him." They also introduced Gallrein as a decorated, retired Navy SEAL and a conservative figure who would support Trump and the "America First" agenda.
Massie countered Gallrein's claims by stating, "Ed is trotting out surrogates, as is typical, to repeat his falsehoods." He added, "Ed is afraid to debate me, he's even afraid to talk to the press." Massie had pledged prior to entering Congress in 2012 to support a constitutional amendment limiting terms to three.
