American Women Speak Out on the Hidden Truths Behind the 'Motherhood Myth'

Claims have emerged that American society has misled women into believing abortion is their only option. There is a growing call for society to empathize with women's real-life struggles and support them, so they can be empowered to choose life. This points to the need to correct the societal perception that has, instead of highlighting the joys of motherhood, presented abortion as a 'quick and easy solution' while ignoring practical difficulties.

One woman raising three young sons shared her sadness witnessing women who feel economic pressure or the burden of single parenthood. She added that her sorrow is even greater for women who visit OB/GYN clinics contemplating abortion as a solution to their problems. Organizations like Human Coalition and Planned Parenthood frequently encounter women in similar situations. It has been found that only 1 in 4 women who decide to have an abortion express certainty about their choice, and the vast majority of women actually respond that they would prefer to raise the child if circumstances were different. This suggests that women choosing abortion often do so not because they are absolutely certain of their decision, but because they feel they have no other options and are therefore choosing a suboptimal path.

Housing instability is cited as a specific difficulty faced by these women. An anonymous woman named 'Maria' had already lost everything when she learned of her pregnancy. She was evicted from her apartment and, lacking stable housing, had to send her teenage son to live with his grandmother in another state. In her early pregnancy, she moved between motels, her car, and emergency shelters. The child's father did not intervene, leaving Maria to bear the sole responsibility of supporting herself and her child. According to a 2023 study, three-quarters of women considering abortion were living below 200% of the federal poverty line. Behind these numbers are real mothers like Maria, experiencing stress from cramped living conditions, evictions, and frequent moves. They desperately need information about organizations that help find stable housing solutions for families, but they often only know about Planned Parenthood, it is reported.

Beyond housing issues, women also struggle with childcare and employment problems. Flexible work environments, in particular, can be a significant help for single mothers. A 2026 Stanford University-led study found that couples who work remotely at least one day per week had 14% more children than couples who did not. Researchers estimate that remote work significantly influences these outcomes.

Against this backdrop, criticism has been raised that American society has presented abortion as the only path for women, rather than opening the door to motherhood. Society has led women to perceive abortion as the sole means of problem-solving, rather than providing them with the genuine support and information they truly need.
