Trump Pushes NATO on Defense Spending; Closing Military Capability Gap is the Challenge
Former U.S. President Donald Trump continues to demand that North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members increase their defense spending, bringing the resolution of the military capability gap with the U.S. to the forefront as a critical challenge for the alliance.
Amidst criticism that some European allies are failing to meet their defense budget commitments, voices are also being raised calling for a shift away from NATO's current structure, which is perceived as overly reliant on the U.S.
The former president criticized the lack of defense spending among NATO allies and ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. He also suggested the possibility of troop reductions in Spain and Italy. Retired General Keith Kellogg, in discussions with the former president, highlighted the need for NATO to pursue 'a new defensive alignment with Europe.'
