Pohang City, POSCO, Daegu Environmental Agency Partner to Boost Reusable Container Use at Funeral Homes
Pohang City, along with the Daegu Regional Environmental Agency, POSCO, and the Labor-Management Council, signed a 'Voluntary Agreement for Expanding Reusable Container Use at Funeral Homes' on May 11, 2026.
This agreement was established to reduce the use of disposable items within funeral homes and to foster a culture of using reusable containers. It represents a regional, mutually beneficial model for practicing plastic reduction, involving public institutions, corporations, and labor representatives.
Pohang City plans to fully launch its reusable container support program for funeral homes through this agreement. To this end, it will select and operate a specialized supporting operator equipped to handle the lending, collection, washing, and redistribution of reusable containers, and will gradually promote the expanded use of reusable containers among funeral homes in the region.
POSCO and the Labor-Management Council have agreed to offer alternative funeral service items to executives and employees who use funeral homes that adopt reusable containers, thereby encouraging voluntary participation.
Pohang City intends to focus on major funeral homes, including Pohang Gukhwa Garden, Pohang Medical Center, Pohang St. Mary's Hospital, Pohang SeMyung Christian Hospital, and Pohang Citizens Funeral Home, to establish an eco-friendly funeral culture and strengthen the regional resource circulation foundation.
Jang Sang-gil, Acting Mayor of Pohang City, stated that it is a necessary time for an eco-friendly transition in the funeral culture sector.
