The South Korean Navy's Cheonghae Unit Destroyer Wang Geon departed for the Gulf of Aden in the Middle East on the 15th. This marks a mission handover from the 47th unit's Destroyer Dae Joyoung, with the Wang Geon expected to arrive in the region in three to four weeks. Prior to its departure, the Wang Geon focused on enhancing its drone detection and response capabilities, conducting intensive aerial drills to prepare for potential threats. Thirty percent of the deployed personnel are veterans of previous Cheonghae Unit missions.

The government is currently considering participation in a multinational mission to ensure navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz or the U.S.-proposed Maritime Security Initiative (MSI). On the 12th, Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek met with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses in Washington D.C. to convey South Korea's phased approach to contributing to the resumption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Minister Ahn's proposed four-stage support includes expressing support, dispatching liaison officers, sharing intelligence, and providing military assets. If the Cheonghae Unit participates in operations related to the Strait of Hormuz, it could range from intelligence sharing to providing military assets. Minister Ahn stated that parliamentary approval is required for any deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. On the 13th, Satellite Yi Rak, Senior Secretary to the President for National Security, mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the U.S.-led MSI.

The Navy stated that the Wang Geon will contribute to international maritime safety and counter-terrorism efforts by escorting vessels and supporting navigation in the Gulf of Aden, while also protecting South Korean citizens and supporting combined naval command operations in case of emergencies.
