Yongin Semiconductor Transmission Line Sparks Resident Backlash Over Plan to Traverse Daejeon City Center
Plans to build transmission lines to supply electricity to large-scale semiconductor factories have triggered a strong backlash from local residents as the routes are set to pass through Daejeon city center. This situation highlights the conflict between national energy policy and local communities, with experts proposing a fundamental re-evaluation of current power grid development methods.
Professor Park Sang-in of Seoul National University's Graduate School of Public Administration explained that there is no public acceptance for channeling regional electricity to the capital area and pointed out that the current power grid is saturated. He diagnosed the construction of the Yongin Semiconductor Complex as difficult under current power and water supply conditions.
Lee Bong-yeol, a citizen reporter for OhmyNews, cited international examples, emphasizing that semiconductor fabrication plants are hazardous facilities and maintaining a certain distance from residential areas is essential. He also stressed the importance of securing renewable energy to meet RE100 commitments.
Ha Seung-soo, head of the Gongik Law Center Nongbon, pointed out legal flaws in the site selection process for the Yongin Semiconductor Industrial Complex. He criticized that while the ease of securing industrial water and electricity is crucial according to industrial site development guidelines, Yongin lacks these two foundational infrastructures.
