With the local elections just two weeks away on June 3, Democratic Party leader Chung Cheong-rae is focusing on the Jeonbuk and Chungnam regions where the political landscape is volatile, while People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk is concentrating on the Yeongnam region to rally its base.

Chung, who has been touring the country, has recently focused his efforts on areas like Gongju in Chungnam and Jeonbuk, where the electoral outlook is unstable. Jang, meanwhile, has visited the Yeongnam region seven times since a controversial trip to the US last month, with both leaders influencing the election by employing distinct regional strategies.

On May 19, Chung attended the opening ceremony of candidate Kim Young-bin's campaign office in Gongju, Chungnam, assessing the local political situation as the gap between candidates Park Soo-hyun and Kim Tae-heum in the Chungnam gubernatorial race narrows to a single digit.

On the same day, Jang attended the launch ceremony of the election committee in Changwon, Gyeongnam, emphasizing that "Gyeongnam is the last line of defense for South Korea and liberal democracy," in an effort to consolidate conservative support.
