US Jobless Claims Hit 4-Month High of 225,000
The number of new unemployment benefit claims in the United States last week was tallied at 225,000. This is the highest figure in approximately four months and exceeded the expert forecast of 215,000 compiled by Bloomberg. Seasonal volatility, potentially linked to the Memorial Day holiday and the start of summer vacation at some schools, may have been a contributing factor.
The number of continuing unemployment claims, for those receiving benefits for two weeks or more, was 1.777 million for the week of May 17-23, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week.
The market is closely watching the May employment report, due on the 5th, as a key indicator for gauging the slowdown in the U.S. job market. Analysis suggests that a continuous rise in unemployment claims could be interpreted as a signal of increasing economic uncertainty.
