Presidential Office Refutes 'Serious Distortion' in WSJ Column
The Presidential Office has criticized a column published in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) by conservative American figures regarding the South Korean government and the South Korea-U.S. alliance, labeling it a 'serious distortion.' The column depicted a specific South Korean administration as 'hardline left' and raised concerns about the country's political situation and the bilateral alliance.
Choi Sung-ah, the Presidential Office's senior secretary for foreign media, contributed a rebuttal to the WSJ to set the record straight, pointing out that the column fails to accurately reflect South Korea's reality and risks undermining trust between allies.
On the 1st (local time), Nicholas E. Eberstadt, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and Lawrence Peck, an advisor to the North Korea Freedom Coalition, published a column in the WSJ titled 'South Korea Pivots Hard Left on America.' In their column, they argued that the current South Korea-U.S. alliance is grappling with the 'recklessness of South Korea's hardline left government.'
The WSJ column was officially entered into the congressional record during a hearing of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee on the 3rd (local time).
