Gwangju Pub Assault Death: Perpetrator Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison
A court has sentenced a man in his 20s to six years in prison for severely assaulting a patron at a pub, leading to the victim's death. The accused, identified as A (28), was arrested and indicted on charges of inflicting fatal injuries.
A had a dispute with B (30), an office worker seated at an adjacent table, at a Gwangju pub in January. A repeatedly struck B in the face more than 10 times and continued the assault by kicking B even after he had fallen.
During the trial, A apologized to B's family but claimed the assault was impulsive, asserting that the victim had initiated the argument. The prosecution countered, presenting evidence such as A luring B outside the pub, where there were no CCTV cameras, and saying, "Let's have a 'Yacharu' (a term for settling disputes physically)," attempting to record B's consent to a fight, arguing the crime was premeditated.
The court noted that "the defendant continued to strike the victim who was no longer able to resist," and that after the assault, the defendant stated, "The recording is complete, so report me if you want." The court further stated, "The young victim passed away in extreme pain due to the defendant's actions," and explained, "A severe punishment commensurate with the gravity of the offense and responsibility is unavoidable."
Prior to his death, B, in accordance with his wishes, donated his organs, including his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and eyes, to seven patients.
