Jeong Cheong-rae, Kim Min-seok Visit Honam Region Over Weekend to Court Party Support
With the Democratic Party of Korea's national convention approaching, potential leadership candidates are focusing on securing support from party members in the Honam region. Honam is considered a crucial battleground, home to over 30% of the Democratic Party's active members.
Jeong Cheong-rae, a former party leader, visited the birthplace of former President Kim Dae-jung on Haui Island in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, on July 3. He posted on Facebook, stating, "President Kim Dae-jung is someone who can never be monopolized by a few individuals. For the success of the Lee Jae-myung administration, for the completion of prosecutorial reform, and for a Democratic Party where members are the masters, I will faithfully follow in your footsteps."
Kim Min-seok, a former Floor Leader, stayed at his home in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, on the same day. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), "My first weekend after retiring as Floor Leader, I am spending it at my home in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. Iksan, and North Jeolla Province, will achieve remarkable leaps forward." He also mentioned visiting a citizen football match and the Iksan National Museum while in Iksan.
Song Young-gil, another leadership contender and lawmaker, attended the Democratic Party's National General Meeting of the University Student Committee held at the National Assembly on July 3. Song emphasized the importance of winning over young voters, stating, "The chance to regain power is possible only if we win the hearts of young people in their 20s and 30s."
