Onion Prices Plummet Amid Surge in Imports and Sluggish Consumption…‘Win-Win’ Discount Sales Launched

Amidst ongoing high inflation driven by factors such as the U.S.-Iran conflict, onion prices have plummeted due to a combination of oversupply, rising imports, and sluggish consumption. According to the June Ulsan Consumer Price Index, while overall vegetable prices showed a slight recovery, onion prices have continued to fall this year following last year's decline, dropping by 42.65 points over the past two years.

In response, the Ulsan headquarters of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (Nonghyup) has launched a 'win-win' discount sale to reduce burdens on both farmers and consumers by cutting distribution margins. The organization directly procured 60 tons of onions from local farms and sold them after significantly slashing distribution margins. A 20kg bag of onions, normally priced over 5,000 won, was sold for around 2,900 won.

Nonghyep Ulsan Headquarters Chief Lee Jong-sam stated that the event was planned to alleviate the difficulties of regional onion farmers while lowering the burden of grocery prices for citizens during this period of high inflation.
