Jeju Carrot Planting Faces Crisis Amid Drought; Farmers Plead for Water Solutions

Carrot planting in Jeju's eastern region is in crisis due to a prolonged heatwave and drought. Farmers are pleading for fundamental solutions, such as the construction of reservoirs and the replacement of irrigation pipes, to address the ongoing shortage of agricultural water.

On the 4th, the Jeju Provincial Council visited the public water tank installation site and carrot planting fields in Pyeongdae-ri, Gujwa-eup, to inspect crop growth and the agricultural water supply situation.

During a subsequent meeting, Gujwa Nonghyup President Yoon Min requested expanded emergency support for irrigation facilities and water tanks. Song Cheol-ju, president of Gujwa Nonghyup Carrot Cooperative, called for the development of reservoirs and the expansion of water supply infrastructure. Ko Man-seok, vice chairman of the Jeju Carrot Federation, proposed an expansion of subsidies for farm water tanks and the replacement of agricultural water pipes.

Council Chairman Song Young-hoon pledged to pursue support through water trucks using disaster safety funds or reserve funds, and promised cooperation in policy and budget allocation for expanding reservoir facilities and improving agricultural water pipes. The council plans to share the feedback received with relevant agencies and continue discussions to devise plans for expanding agricultural water infrastructure.
