Heatwave Fuels Surge in Vegetable Prices, 'Heatflation' Becomes Reality

The average retail price of spinach has skyrocketed by approximately 120%, from 793 won to 1,747 won, making concerns over food prices due to the heatwave a stark reality. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation and other sources, prices for major leafy vegetables have recorded unprecedented gains in the past month. Following spinach's more than twofold increase, prices for young radish and small cabbage have also risen by 69% and 56% respectively, while lettuce prices have seen an increase of over 20%. At major distribution hubs like the Gakhwa Agricultural Wholesale Market in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, the phenomenon of 'heatflation' is clearly observed, with vegetable production plummeting due to record-high temperatures, leading to sharp price hikes.

The decline in production at the source has led to a scramble for supplies at wholesale markets, yet the quality of goods actually being distributed is trending downwards. Yoon Yoon-jeong, a wholesaler at the Gakhwa Agricultural Wholesale Market, the largest in the Honam region, explained that while leafy vegetables should be green, due to the heatwave, leaves are developing black spots or turning yellow at the edges, diminishing their marketability compared to previous years. Amidst supply shortages and declining quality, wholesalers are clearly struggling to secure select produce. Concerns are also being raised that the actual available supply might be even lower than the recorded figures, as vegetables arriving from production sites are exposed to high temperatures, causing them to wilt or discolor.

The impact of price increases is creating a double whammy of reduced household spending and worsening profitability for small business owners. Consumers Shin Hyun-jin and Yoo Seung-yeon, shopping in Nampyeong-eup, Naju City, expressed hesitation to purchase salad vegetables due to their inflated prices. Consumers are responding to the rising cost of essential vegetables by reducing purchase quantities or seeking alternative ingredients.

The restaurant industry is facing immense pressure, grappling not only with increased food costs but also with soaring cooling expenses due to the record heat. Restaurant owner Ryu Young-gwan stated that the global economic situation and general price increases have been compounded by the adverse weather conditions of the heatwave, significantly reducing his actual take-home profit. With a business structure that makes it difficult to immediately pass on rising food ingredient costs to menu prices, the financial burden on small business owners continues to grow.

The current trend, where rising temperatures hinder crop growth and consequently drive up overall prices, is expected to exert significant downward pressure on overall food prices for the foreseeable future. The unstable movement of agricultural product prices is not just a problem for farmers but inflicts economic damage on both small business owners and consumers, exacerbating supply-demand imbalances in the market. The distribution industry must now closely monitor the fluctuations in supply volume driven by weather conditions and seek measures to stabilize supply and demand going forward.
