Man in 50s and Woman in 80s Die from Heat-Related Illnesses Amid Seoul Heat Wave

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 9th that two people—a man in his 50s and a woman in his 80s—died from heat-related illnesses on the 7th amid a heat wave. The man in his 50s was found on a roadside in Jungnang-gu around 6 p.m. that day and was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The woman in her 80s was transported from her home in Gangnam-gu around 4:30 p.m. but also died. Both victims were confirmed to have had no underlying health conditions.

There were 35 heat-related illness patients in the Seoul area on the 7th, including the two fatalities. This marks the first occurrence of heat-related deaths in Seoul since June 29, a span of 39 days, and represents the highest daily death toll this year. Since May 15, the cumulative total of heat-related illness patients in Seoul stands at 386, including four deaths.

The city government urged residents to refrain from outdoor activities in the sweltering heat and to consume sufficient fluids. They added that the elderly are susceptible to heat symptoms even indoors and advised caution regarding the use of air conditioning and other cooling devices.
