U.S. AI Protectionism Expands Reach to Robotics Industry

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the import of a wide range of advanced overseas-manufactured robots, including humanoid, quadruped, and wheeled models. As a result of this measure, the entry of Chinese devices previously used by academia and industry in the U.S. for research purposes has also been blocked.

The FCC explained that foreign-made robots that excessively collect data in homes and sensitive facilities pose a threat to national security. The Commission also hinted at the industry development aspect of this measure, stating that a safe domestic supply chain can only be built by protecting the U.S. robotics industry from Chinese competition.

Meanwhile, as the Trump administration considers a ban on Chinese open-source AI models, there is a possibility that U.S. protectionism could extend from robotics to the software sector.
