Lee Jae-myung Government's New Criminal Justice System Takes Its First Step
With the prosecution service abolished and the new system launched on the 2nd, separating investigations under the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and indictments under the Public Prosecution Service, Prime Minister Han Seong-sook pledged to "do our utmost to ensure not a single gap" in everything from receiving complaints and reports to protecting victims. Why such a vow? Because on its first day, the key question is how to safeguard citizens' everyday lives.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) that afternoon, the prime minister said the new criminal justice system, which divides investigation and prosecution, had taken its first step. She stressed that citizens' daily lives must not be shaken even as the system changes, saying that ongoing cases must never stall or be delayed, and that people must never suffer inconvenience from overlapping or unclear responsibilities between agencies.
Prime Minister Han said the purpose of the reform is to respond more strictly to crime while protecting citizens' rights more robustly. She emphasized that the transition will move swiftly while principles remain firmly in place.
