AI Value Investing Strategy Stays Resilient as Korean Market Gets Pummeled

As the KOSPI plunged more than 6% in a single day and broke below the 5,000 mark, the AI value investing portfolio held onto a +13.04% return, showing a steady course through the storm. Still, the day came with a costly lesson: assets evaporated by more than 13% overnight, falling from $13,100 to $11,303.

Defending Assets Through the Sharp Sell-Off

Looking at the asset trend over the past five days, the portfolio hovered around the $13,500 level before sharply collapsing on the 6th. With its heavy concentration in the semiconductor sector, it was bound to absorb the full brunt of the market shock, with leveraged holdings SOXL and TQQQ amplifying the day's losses, analysis suggests. Even so, maintaining a double-digit return versus initial capital is the result of accumulated profit-taking in individual stocks.

AMD, up roughly twofold from its purchase price, has become the portfolio's biggest contributor to gains. However, its P/E ratio of 86 suggests the market has already priced in extremely optimistic expectations. Micron, by contrast, maintains a low P/E of 8.8 and trades at a deep discount to its growth rate (PEG 0.16), making it a potential buying opportunity during the correction. NVIDIA, too, has ample justification for keeping its core AI stake, backed by a reasonable 23x valuation and low PEG.

The recent trading pattern is clear: take partial profits from the surging AMD and the increasingly heavyweight NVIDIA, then use the proceeds to build positions gradually in Micron and TSMC, where HBM demand remains robust. Micron was bought in four tranches, scaling down from the $1,000 level to $650—consistently turning the downturn into an opportunity.

Outlook: Patience Through a Volatile Phase

With the VIX easing to 25.64 and fear subsiding somewhat, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's 4.21% surge reflects market expectations of a rebound in the sector. However, the won-dollar exchange rate spiking to 1,363 and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbing to 4.86% could weigh on growth-stock valuations. With oil prices holding in the $90 range, inflationary pressures have not fully dissipated either. For this portfolio, the road ahead calls for patience, not speed.
