Korea, India to Expand Strategic Cooperation, Bolster Peace Partnership
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a summit in New Delhi on the 20th, agreeing to expand cooperation in strategic sectors and continue joint efforts for regional peace.
Speaking at a joint press conference after the summit, President Lee assessed India as the world's fourth-largest economy and a leader of the 'Global South.' Both leaders concurred that they could be optimal partners to foster each other's growth.
The meeting discussed specific measures to strengthen cooperation beyond existing economic ties. Agreements were reached on expanding collaboration in shipbuilding, finance, artificial intelligence, and defense industries, as well as enhancing cultural and people-to-people exchanges. South Korea aims to accelerate innovation in shipbuilding, semiconductors, defense, and cultural industries.
Amidst rapidly changing international dynamics, both leaders pledged to maintain close coordination to address regional peace and global issues. They shared the view that restoring stability and peace in the Middle East is crucial for global security and the economy. President Lee explained South Korea's efforts to build peace on the Korean Peninsula and expressed gratitude for the Indian government's consistent support, stating that he looks forward to India's constructive role in peace on the peninsula and in the region going forward.
Following his visit to India, President Lee will make a state visit to Vietnam from April 21 to 24, 2026, concluding his tour of Southeast and Southwest Asia.
