The Atlantic Reporter Faces $250 Million Defamation Lawsuit
A reporter for the American news magazine The Atlantic and the publication itself have been sued for defamation in a lawsuit seeking $250 million, approximately 250 billion South Korean won.
Sarah Fitzpatrick, a contributing writer for The Atlantic, defended her article about FBI Director Kash Patel, stating she has received numerous responses from government officials reaffirming the report's contents since its publication. The article included details such as 'erratic behavior,' 'excessive drinking,' and 'unexplained absences,' described as examples illustrating Patel's unstable tenure. Over 20 individuals, including current and former FBI officials, law enforcement and intelligence agency employees, congressional members, and political activists, were interviewed. Fitzpatrick's article was published alongside a photo of FBI Director Kash Patel attending a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington on March 18.
Kash Patel has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic. The complaint also mentions Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Donald Trump. The lawsuit is proceeding in a Washington D.C. court.
The FBI characterized the report as 'defamatory lies' and an attempt to distract from the FBI's successes. An FBI spokesperson stated, 'Repeating defamatory lies does not make them true.' The FBI countered that such reporting amounts to 'defamatory lies' and that the lawsuit is an effort to divert attention from the FBI's record of success.
