Public Petition Opposing Military Academy Merger Underway
A public petition opposing the merger of the Army, Navy, and Air Force military academies is currently proceeding with the signature collection process. Discussions for integrating the academies have been raised citing reasons such as population decline and budget savings, with the petition open for participation until May 23.
Arguments are being made that merging military academies could weaken the foundations of military professionalism, identity, and command structure—the bedrock of South Korea's military power—posing a national security risk. Even the United States, which possesses the world's strongest military, has not merged its Army, Navy, and Air Force academies, citing the essential differences in the missions of each branch. Joint operations are secured through advanced joint education and training, not consolidation.
Concerns are also raised that officer training capable of developing core combat capabilities for each service branch could be weakened, and that the costs associated with relocating campuses, new construction, curriculum integration, and personnel reassignment during a merger could paradoxically lead to a 'budget bomb'.
