Ulsan Conservative Unification, Jeonbuk's Kim Gwan-young Candidacy: Key Variables

With just over a month left until the June 3 local elections, the landscape of the 16 metropolitan mayoral races across the country is shifting from its initial state. Unlike the early days when the possibility of a victory for the Democratic Party was being discussed based on President Lee Jae-myung's high approval ratings, the election momentum is gradually changing as campaigning intensifies. Signs of conservative bloc consolidation are being observed in traditionally conservative strongholds of Daegu/Gyeongbuk (TK) and Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam (PK).

In Ulsan, the unification of various conservative candidates into a single force has emerged as the biggest factor that will determine the election's outcome. Park Maeng-woo, excluded from the People Power Party's nomination, has launched an independent bid, making the decision on whether conservatives will unite a key variable that will decide the contest.

In the Jeonbuk governor's race, the possibility of incumbent Governor Kim Gwan-young running as an independent, rather than under his party affiliation, is expected to become a variable in the electoral structure. While a victory for Democratic Party candidate Lee Won-taek was initially considered likely, the potential for Governor Kim Gwan-young to run as an independent has created a variable in the election dynamics.
